Adding Alt Text in Shopify

For Product Images

Go to Shopify Admin → Products
Select a product
Hover over an image — click the three-dot menu (⋯)
Select "Edit alt text"
Enter descriptive alt text and Save

For Theme Images

Go to Online Store → Themes → Customize
Select any image element
Look for Image alt text field in the sidebar

Shopify Image Filename Optimisation

Shopify automatically converts filenames when you upload — replacing spaces with hyphens. However, it preserves the original filename structure. Before uploading:

Shopify Image Compression

Shopify automatically serves images via their CDN and converts them to WebP for supported browsers — which is excellent. However, you should still upload well-compressed source images:

Product images: aim for under 200KB before upload
Shopify's automatic resizing works best when your source image is 2048 x 2048px
Use JPEG for photographs, PNG only when transparency is needed

Image SEO for Shopify Collections

Collection pages often rank well in Google. Each collection should have:

A banner image with descriptive alt text
SEO-optimised collection description (this is used as meta description)
Products with alt-text-optimised images that appear in collection
